The New Ward

One new maternity ward. DELIVERED.

Families in Surrey and White Rock can now welcome their babies in a brand new maternity ward at Peace Arch Hospital which is now fully open. The $5.3-million major renovation and expansion, funded by Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation, was completed on time and within budget. Families who welcome their sons and daughters at Peace Arch Hospital can expect:

  • Family-centered care in a homelike atmosphere
  • Eight modern, spacious single-family birthing rooms
  • Almost three times the birthing capacity of the old ward
  • Concealed, state-of-the-art technology in each birthing room
  • 50 per cent more space than the old ward
  • A secure dedicated entry
  • The same outstanding care that is the hallmark of the Peace Arch Hospital maternity program

“I would like to thank the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation and all of the community members who contributed to this very worthwhile cause,” said Surrey-White Rock MLA Gordon Hogg, on behalf of Health Services Minister Colin Hansen. “As a father myself, I know that welcoming a new child into the world is an exciting, happy time, but it can also be scary. This new maternity ward will help to make the experience as positive and joyful as possible for families.”

“Fraser Health congratulates the Foundation and the many generous donors in the community. Their contributions will enhance the care and experience for mothers, newborns and their supportive family members,” said Dr. Nigel Murray, President and CEO of Fraser Health. “Fraser Health’s goal is for all our maternity units to shift to single-room maternity care because of the demonstrated improvements to health outcomes and patient experiences.”

“When Fraser Health approached the foundation with a request to fund a new maternity ward at Peace Arch Hospital, we didn’t hesitate,” said Dragana Sanderson past chair of the Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation’s board and project champion.

“The enthusiasm in the community for the OH BABY appeal has been phenomenal,” said Jackie Smith, Peace Arch Hospital Foundation’s executive director. “I extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the appeal,” said Smith, “The birth of a child is a family affair, and families in our community now have an amazing space in which to celebrate their new arrivals.”

Major donors to the appeal include Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary Society, Red FM, the Cmolik Family, Semiahmoo Rotary Club, CIBC, Envision Financial, Scotiabank, Frank & Yvonne McCracken Foundation and Thrifty Foods.

The first phase of the new ward, which included four single-family birthing rooms and the Thrifty Foods Education Centre, opened in July 2010. The opening of the remaining four birthing rooms and the CIBC nursery concludes the project, which is one of five priority initiatives in the $32-million Partners in Caring Campaign.

Fundraising for this project is in its final phase. Naming opportunities are still available. For more information, please contact the foundation at 604.535.4520.
